Officers in the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police receive two separate London uplifts on top of national basic pay. Both are pensionable and both stack:
- London Weighting (£2,886/year) — paid only to federated ranks (Constable, Sergeant). Established under Police Regulations as a flat allowance. Inspector / Chief Inspector use a bespoke London pay scale instead (different national basic, no separate LW).
- London Allowance (£6,588/year, effective April 2025) — paid to all federated and superintending ranks. City of London Police pay this to match the Met. Funded force-locally, not by central PRRB.
For a federated officer (Constable / Sergeant): national basic + £2,886 LW + £6,588 LA = £9,474 total London uplift.
For Inspector / Chief Inspector: bespoke London pay scale (already includes ~£2,700 uplift over national) + £6,588 LA on top.
For Superintendent / Chief Superintendent: national basic + £6,588 LA only (no LW, no separate London scale).
ACC and chief officer ranks have separate force-level arrangements; the £6,588 LA doesn't automatically apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Met Police Constable earn?
A starting Met Constable (Pay Point 1, post-2013 entry) earns £40,638: £31,164 national basic + £2,886 London Weighting + £6,588 London Allowance. A top-of-scale Met Constable earns £59,730.
Do City of London Police get the same London pay as the Met?
Yes — since April 2025, City of London Police match the Met London Allowance at £6,588/year. Both forces pay the standard £2,886 London Weighting for federated ranks. So a City of London PC earns the same as a Met PC at any given pay point.
Is the London Allowance pensionable?
Yes. The London Allowance is pensionable and is included in the calculation of PPS 2015 employee contribution rate (which is tiered by total pensionable pay).
Why are there two separate London components?
They have different histories. London Weighting is part of the national Police Regulations and applies to federated ranks specifically. The London Allowance is force-paid, introduced to recognise the additional cost and demands of policing London. The Police Remuneration Review Body indicated in 2025 that it will revisit the LA structure in its 2026 report.
Do superintending ranks in the Met get London pay?
They receive the £6,588 London Allowance but not the £2,886 London Weighting (which is federated-rank specific). Superintendent and Chief Superintendent pay scales are national; the LA is the only Met / City uplift on top.
