The Police Constable is the front-line operational rank — the warranted officer who patrols, responds to incidents, investigates and arrests. Constables form the bulk of every UK police force.
Officers joining service after April 2013 progress on a 7-point pay scale from £31,164 at entry to £50,256 at the top, typically reaching the top of scale after around 7 years of competent service. Officers who joined before April 2013 are on a separate 8-point scale starting at £32,820. Both top out at £50,256.
Met Police and City of London Police officers receive two London uplifts on top of basic: London Weighting £2,886 + London Allowance £6,588 = £9,474 total. Both are pensionable. So a top-of-scale Met Constable earns £59,730. Specialist roles attract additional pensionable allowances.
Overtime is paid at time-and-a-third (1.333× hourly) for standard overtime, time-and-a-half on rest days, and double time on public holidays. All active Constables from April 2022 accrue pension in PPS 2015 CARE (12.44% / 13.44% / 13.78% by pay tier).
