The Superintendent is the first of the superintending ranks — above the federated ranks (Constable to Chief Inspector), below Chief Superintendent. Superintendents typically command a Basic Command Unit (BCU), a force-wide department, or act as Gold/Silver commanders for major operations and critical incidents.
Promotion is by competitive process from Chief Inspector, typically involving the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (Senior PNAC) and force-level selection. The rank carries 4 service-based pay points from £84,177 on promotion to £99,015 at the top, typically one point per year.
Met and City of London Superintendents receive the £6,588 London Allowance on top of national basic (superintending ranks don't receive the £2,886 London Weighting or a separate London scale — just the LA). Top-of-scale Met Superintendent pay is £105,603.
