The Superintendent is the first of the superintending ranks — above the federated ranks (Constable to Chief Inspector), below Chief Superintendent. Superintendents typically command a Basic Command Unit (BCU), a force-wide department, or act as Gold/Silver commanders for major operations and critical incidents.
Promotion is by competitive process from Chief Inspector, typically involving the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (Senior PNAC) and force-level selection. The rank carries 4 service-based pay points from £87,123 on promotion to £102,481 at the top, typically one point per year.
Met and City of London Superintendents receive the £6,819 London Allowance on top of national basic (superintending ranks don't receive the £3,260 London Weighting or a separate London scale — just the LA). Top-of-scale Met Superintendent pay is £109,299.
Superintendents do not receive overtime — the trade-off for substantially higher basic pay. Members are represented by the Police Superintendents' Association rather than the Federation. Pension is PPS 2015 CARE at the top contribution tier — 13.78% on pay above £60,000.
The superintendent scale is unusually wide: four points spanning more than £15,000, against roughly £4,000 for chief inspector. It also straddles the £100,000 threshold at which the Personal Allowance begins to taper, so the net figures in the table above rise more slowly than gross towards the top of the scale.
