A detective chief inspector is paid on the chief inspector scale. The rank sets the pay, not the role, so a DCI leading a major incident room and a uniformed chief inspector running a response command are on identical basic pay.
DCI is the senior investigating officer rank for homicide and other major crime, and it is the top of the federated ranks. The scale is narrow — four points covering roughly £4,100 — so most of the financial change at this level comes from promotion rather than increment.
The step above is detective superintendent, and it is the largest in the structure: about £10,212 from the top of chief inspector to the bottom of superintendent. It also moves an officer out of the federated ranks and into the superintending ranks, which are represented separately and negotiated on their own scale.
