How regional pay variants are applied

Met Police / City of London: federated ranks get London Weighting £3,150 + London Allowance £6,588 = £9,738 (April 2025 rates). Inspector / Chief Inspector use the bespoke London pay scale + £6,588 LA. Superintending ranks get £6,588 LA only.
South East forces (£3,000): Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Thames Valley — federated ranks add £3,000/year on top of national basic.
South East forces (£2,000): Bedfordshire, Hampshire, Sussex — federated ranks add £2,000/year.
Standard England & Wales: national basic only, no regional uplift.
Police Scotland / PSNI / BTP / CNC / MoD Police: these have separate pay scales — v1 of the calculator uses the E&W scale and surfaces a clear caveat; check your latest payslip for the exact figures.

Tax Code 1257L +

Apply Police Uniform Allowance (£140/yr)
HMRC flat-rate expense (EIM67200) for federated ranks and below who launder their own uniform — adds £140 to your Personal Allowance, worth around £28/yr in tax saved (or £56 if you’re a higher-rate taxpayer).
How do I actually claim it?

Submit form P87 (or claim through your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk) and HMRC will uplift your tax code to 1271L going forward. You can backdate up to 4 tax years. Once your live tax code reads 1271L (or similar), turn this toggle off and use the actual code in the field above to avoid double-counting.

Estimate indicative mortgage borrowing
Indicative mortgage borrowing capacity
£0

Range based on a 4.0× to 4.5× multiplier of your annual gross income — the typical loan-to-income range UK lenders use following the 2014 Mortgage Market Review rules. Some lenders cap at 4.0×, others stretch to 4.5× for higher earners or with smaller deposits. Indicative only. Lenders also assess credit score, deposit, existing debts, dependants, and stress-test affordability at higher interest rates. Your actual mortgage borrowing capacity will vary.

Which UK police ranks does this calculator cover?
Every UK police rank in England & Wales — federated (Constable through Chief Inspector, both pre- and post-2013 Constable scales), superintending (Superintendent / Chief Superintendent), all chief officer ranks (ACC / Commander, Deputy Chief Constable Group 1-3, Chief Constable Group 1-3), and Met / City senior ranks (DAC, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner). Scotland and Northern Ireland use separate pay frameworks and are not yet modelled.
Which pay scales does it use?
Police Pay Review Body (PRRB) figures for England & Wales, effective 1 September 2025 for federated ranks. The Assistant Chief Constable figures are effective 1 September 2023 — the 2025 chief officer review hadn't been published as of build date. Scotland (Police Scotland) and Northern Ireland (PSNI) have separate pay scales and aren't currently modelled.
Which pension scheme can I model?
All three Police Pension Schemes: PPS 1987 (Old Scheme, closed — final salary, standard contribution 11%), NPPS 2006 (closed — final salary, standard 9.5%), and PPS 2015 / CARE (current scheme, tiered 12.44% / 13.44% / 13.78% by pay band). Most active officers from April 2022 onward accrue in PPS 2015 following the McCloud remedy. Pre-2022 service stays in the relevant legacy scheme. Note: the 1987 and 2006 rates are the original scheme rates per their Members' Guides; the 2012-2014 public-sector pension reforms staged uplifts that may have applied since — verify with current force payroll if you have substantial legacy service.

How does London pay work for Met and City of London officers?
There are two separate components stacked on top of national basic pay for Met Police and City of London Police officers:

1. London Weighting (£3,150/year) — paid only to federated ranks (Constable, Sergeant). Pensionable, paid as a flat allowance. Inspector / Chief Inspector use a bespoke London pay scale instead (no separate LW). Superintendent and above don't receive LW.

2. London Allowance (£6,588/year, effective April 2025) — paid to all federated and superintending ranks (Constable through Chief Superintendent). City of London Police pay this to match the Met. Pensionable. ACC and chief officer ranks have separate force-level arrangements.

The calculator stacks both automatically when you select "London" as Force Location. Total Met / City uplift for a federated officer: £9,738/year on top of national basic. For Inspecting ranks the bespoke London scale already includes the equivalent uplift over national basic, plus an additional £6,588 LA on top.
Why are there two Constable scales?
Officers who joined service before April 2013 progressed on the older 8-point scale starting at £32,820 on commencing service. Officers joining after April 2013 are on the modern 7-point scale starting at £31,164 (Point 1). Both top out at £50,256 at the highest pay point. Pick the variant matching your joining date from the rank dropdown.
How is police overtime calculated?
Standard overtime is paid at time-and-a-third (1.333× basic hourly rate) for hours worked beyond the contracted 40-hour week. Rest days and public holidays are typically paid at time-and-a-half (1.5×). Exact arrangements can vary slightly between forces — check your local pay circular for definitive rates. Enter your monthly overtime hours and pick the multiplier in the Allowances & Overtime section.
Is this calculator official?
No. This is an independent estimation tool. It's not affiliated with the Police Federation, the Home Office, the College of Policing, or any Police Force. Verify figures with your force payroll before making major financial decisions.
What about specialist allowances (firearms, driver, on-call)?
Modelled as first-class inputs: Dog Handlers Allowance (£2,946/year, pensionable) as a checkbox, Overtime at the 1.333× or 1.5× multiplier (non-pensionable), Public Holiday working at 1.5× or 2.0× premium (Annex H, non-pensionable), and Acting Up Pay with rank + pay point + days (Police Regs reg 28, pensionable — the calc computes the daily differential automatically). For everything else (firearms, advanced driver, CID supplement, shift disturbance, South East Allowance for forces not auto-detected, etc.) use the generic "Other allowances" annual £ field — treated as pensionable.
What student loan plan am I on?
Plan 1 is for English/Welsh students who started before September 2012, Plan 2 for those after. Plan 4 is for Scottish students, Plan 5 for English students from September 2023. Postgraduate loans are repaid alongside other plans. Each has different repayment thresholds and rates.
